I’ve long been a fan of Adelaide Hills winery Shaw + Smith, whose M3 Chardonnay and Shiraz are among Australia’s finest cool climate expressions of these varieties.
The Other Wine Co is an affiliated label that expands fruit sourcing beyond the Hills to showcase some very on-trend varieties and styles at more accessible prices of between $26 and $35.
The Shaw + Smith predilection for elegance and fruit expression persists right across the range, with all the wines representing solid value at their price points.
The company has had a presence in Tasmania since the company’s 2011 purchase of the esteemed Tolpuddle Vineyard in Coal River Valley.
The Other Wine Co Pinot Noir 2019 is an earlier drinking style than the eponymous Tolpuddle Pinot, but it’s certainly not a lightweight Tasmanian Pinot Noir (which can sometimes leave you wanting more complexity and interest even at circa $30).
It’s intensely aromatic and full of juicy red fruits and spices that linger wonderfully on the palate with a long, grippy finish. Eminently drinkable and moreish; this is $35 worth of pinot and more.
