White Bay Beer Embrace The Space IPA

Embrace The Space is the first in a small batch series of India Pale Ales from Balmain start-up, White Bay Beer Co.

White Bay head brewer Dennis De Boer has a solid pedigree in the production of hoppy beers.

He worked alongside Mountain Culture founder DJ McCready – a previous guest on the Drinks Adventures podcast – at both Oskar Blues in the US and Modus Operandi Brewing in Sydney, where he subsequently replaced DJ as head brewer.

As such, I’m expecting big things from the White Bay IPAs and was not disappointed by the isolation-themed debut, Embrace The Space.

It’s 6.5 per cent ABV and brimming with dank, tropical hop character. It’s pale, fairly hazy and lower in bitterness than a West Coast IPA, and quite chewy and resiny on the palate.

As such, style-wise it sits somewhere in between the IPAs of yesteryear and the hazies of the moment.

A little lacking in definition, but still highly drinkable, it’s a sign of big things to come from Dennis De Boer and the Balmain area’s first ever brewery.
