Irish whiskey booming in Australia

The Irish Whiskey Association has set its sights on continued strong growth in Australia off the back of St Patrick’s Day 2022.

introducing the Discover Irish Whiskey event last week, Irish Consul-General to Sydney, Rosie Keane, said global Irish whiskey sales had grown by 150 per cent over the last decade to 13 million cases.

“I’m delighted to say that Australia has been one of the fastest growing markets for Irish whiskey and sales here have doubled from 2016 to 2020,” she said.

“Australia now has sales of about 250,000 cases, over three million bottles per year.

“That’s an increase of 22 per cent in 2020 alone.”

Meanwhile, the number of Irish whiskey distilleries has grown from four to 40 since 2010.

Last week’s event showcased four brands, starting with the long-established Tullamore D.E.W., the second largest selling Irish whiskey globally.

First produced in 1829, Tullamore D.E.W. has been owned by Scottish distiller William Grant & Sons since 2010.

Also featuring was The Dubliner, which has been produced since 2019 by The Dublin Liberties Distillery, part of the Quintessential Brands Group.

Boann Distillery in Drogheda, County Louth – founded in 2019 by the Cooney family – presented The Whistler P.X. I Love You Single Malt Irish Whiskey.

And Slane Distillery, established at the Conyngham family’s Slane Castle in 2017 by American distiller Brown-Forman, introduced its Slane Blended Irish Whiskey.

The Irish Whiskey Association is encouraging drinkers to discover the depth and diversity of Irish whiskey this St Patrick’s Day and experiment with serving it in cocktails and as an accompaniment to food.
