Distillers Association slams non-member’s gin recall

A Victorian distillery has recalled a product labelled as gin, that in fact contained hand sanitiser, which was sold to a small number of consumers over the weekend.

The bottles of Apollo Bay Distillery‘s SS Casino Gin were purchased by consumers at nearby venue Taste of the Region – a tasting room within the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse showcasing local products – between 5pm on Friday June 5 and 7.30pm on Sunday June 7.

“The product is labelled as gin, however it is not gin,” the product recall states.

“The bottles are not correctly sealed, they can be identified as having no shrink wrap seal.”

The bottles contain 1.45 per cent glycerol and 0.125 per cent hydrogen peroxide, which are both standard ingredients in hand sanitiser.

“The product is NOT to be consumed,” says the recall. “Consumption of the product may have side effects including nausea, headaches, dizziness, bloating, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea.”

Apollo Bay Distillery told followers on Facebook that the issue arose due to, “a mistake with the labelling of nine SS Casino products”.

“We’re of the understanding the product is not toxic, but we still have to recall all SS Casino products purchased from Taste of the Region between Friday and Sunday.”

Trust our members’ brands: ADA
Responding to the news, Australian Distillers Association president Stuart Gregor told Drinks Adventures: “The first thing we should point out is this distiller is NOT a member of the ADA.”

“We have pretty strict and stringent membership criteria and expectations and we know nothing of this distillery,” he said.

“It seems an obvious and abject shame that this is the first time we have come across them.”

Gregor said consumers should always ask whether the distillery they are buying from is a member of the ADA.

“That would always be reassuring,” he said.

“I’ve no idea how this could happen and hope first of all that nobody is injured or made sick by this.”

Apollo Bay Distillery did not respond to a request for comment.
